Great Mayan Ruins by San Ignacio, Belize: Xunantunich

Colin and I were sun-stroked and drenched with sweat by the time we made it to San Ignacio, Belize’s famous Mayan ruins, Xunantunich… but man was it worth it. Come cyber-join us on our journey!

It took us hours to finally reach Xunantunich from our San Ignacio hotel due to a “hilarious” misunderstanding of how time is quantified in Belize.

Several local people had told us, “Oh yes, you can walk to the ruins. It’s [...Read More!]

Our Romantic Honeymoon Jungle Resort in Belize: Ka'ana

“The Cayo district of western Belize is about adventure,” people told us as we planned our Belize Honeymoon.

“The area around San Ignacio is like the Indiana Jones part of the country. In Cayo, you hike ancient Mayan ruins, swim through underground caves to see skeletons of human sacrifices, and tour an iguana sanctuary.”

“Cool!” I exclaimed.

“But the thing is,” these wise Belize travel advisors continued, “You want to do all that adventure [...Read More!]

Caye Caulker vs. Ambergris Caye, Belize: Which Wins?

As we were planning our Belize Honeymoon, advice flew forth from friends, fast and furious:

“Go to Ambergris Caye! It’s more posh and there’s more to do.”

“No, Caye Caulker is so much better! It’s so chill and relaxing.”

That way we could sample each and [...Read More!]

Our Beautiful Resort in San Pedro, Belize: The Phoenix

When you’re a middle school teacher, kindness becomes priceless.

Thus, when Colin and I (both public school teachers) walked into The Phoenix Resort in San Pedro on the island of Ambergris Caye for the first day of our Belize Honeymoon, we were nearly moved to tears.

“Welcome!” sang Gabriela at the front desk. “You must be Lillie and Colin.”

“Oh!” I gasped, stunned to be addressed by name, rather than as an anonymous traveler.

“Fresh [...Read More!]

Starting Our Belize Honeymoon Flying on a Tiny Plane!

First things first: We had the best wedding ever!!!! Photos will take several weeks to compile, however, so in the meantime, be content with luscious photos from our 2-week Belize Honeymoon.

And please don’t demand (as several well-meaning souls have already) that I stop writing during my Honeymoon. If I hated writing, I would stop, but our Honeymoon philosophy is that of Cartman from South Park, “I do what I want!” and [...Read More!]

Wedding Planning is Travel to a Crazy Foreign Country

“What kind of wedding do you think you’ll have if you ever get married?” my roommate Meg asked me our Sophomore year in college.

“Easy,” I declared. “I’ll have a potluck in a field and wear a rainbow colored dress I make myself.”

Well, it’s a decade after that conversation, I’m getting married in five days, and my rustic wedding prediction was totally wrong.

Instead, Colin and I are going FULL OUT into Wedding [...Read More!]

My Speech With the Mayor at the Boston Hostel Opening

Perhaps you read in the Boston Globe that Boston just opened the New Boston Hostel: a gorgeous, affordable 480-bed hostel in the heart of downtown…

Here is the text of my speech.
