What Do New Mothers Do All Day (and Night)? One Word.

There is a one-word answer for me to the following questions: “What do new moms DO all day… and night? Why do people say new parents don’t sleep?” and “Why do new mothers disappear?” The one-word answer is something that many women with newborns do (70% in the U.S.) — and do for up to 35 hours a week — but that is seldom discussed or understood in terms of the time it [...Read More!]

Wandering the Gold and Spice Souks of Deira, Dubai

During my 9-day trip to Dubai, pregnant and alone, I delighted in wandering the Gold and Spice Souks: Luscious markets located in the Deira neighborhood of Dubai. Walk with me now to take in the sights!

Deira is the old-time commercial heart of Dubai, featuring winding, stall-filled streets that harken back to the early years of the city before the mega-malls were built. (You know: those malls that are so big, a ski mountain could fit [...Read More!]

Lovely Vineyards of the Finger Lakes, New York

As the weather warms, summer travel schemes bubble in my brain, and my thoughts turn to our fantastic Finger Lakes, New York escapades last summer. A huge highlight of that week was touring the famous vineyards of the region.

Now, before you slam shut the computer because you aren’t a wine fan, know that I was secretly pregnant the whole trip, and thus never once imbibed — but still had a fabulous time! [...Read More!]

She's Here! Our New Baby is Here! Woo Hoo!

Yaaaaayyy!!! Colin and I are so happy to introduce you to our new baby: an 8-pound, 20.5-inch cuddler named… Joya. I have covered her soft cheeks in kisses in the hours since her birth, and plan to kiss her a whole lot more in the years to come.

Joya was born with robust health at 4am after 12 hours of labor — significantly shorter than the 28 hours I labored with Devi. The [...Read More!]

Turkish Street Foods: Ice Cream, Mussels, and More!

For most of my travels in Turkey, I was extremely busy scarfing every food in sight. In an effort to peer pressure you to do the same, let us take a tour of the delectable Turkish street treats you can encounter, both in the country itself, and in Turkish food stalls around the world.

A major culinary joy of Turkey for me was Turkish ice cream, also called dondurma. This confection is distinct from non-Turkish ice [...Read More!]

Pregnant AND Toddler: 17 Tips to Help Home and Travel

As I write this, I am 8.5 months pregnant and being punched from the inside by my fetus as our toddler runs down the hallway dragging a tin of olive oil he stole from the grocery bag, chased in hot pursuit by my husband.

I always knew I’d need to write this article because I always wondered: What is it like to be pregnant AND have a toddler, both at home and during travel? Your [...Read More!]

The Most Beautiful Art Exhibit in the World: Chihuly Glass

Is there a word to describe nostalgia for something you’ll never see again? A beloved house that’s been sold. A favorite store that’s closed forever. A one-time-only art exhibit that’s since been disassembled and scattered around the world…

This “I’ll never see it again! Nooo!” nostalgia was my feeling about the Chihuly glass art exhibit that I fell in love with in 2011 during its temporary showing at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. I knew [...Read More!]
