Why Being a Teacher is the Best Job: The OTHER Reason

“Miss!” one of my seventh graders yelled, “There’s fake blood all over the wall!”

The kids acting the Hammurabi skit froze as we all whipped our heads around. Sure enough, the entire wall— my “Class Objectives” whiteboard, our vocabulary words, and the stately blue paint— were splattered with red carnage. But that wasn’t all. A river of fake blood streaked the wooden floor, and the clothes of the student actors were polka-dotted [...Read More!]

A Hidden Hike in the Beautiful Berkshire Mountains

Remember how one secret to a happy relationship is to take exciting weekend trips? Let’s add to that: Make your relationships even more thrilling by including hilarious and brilliant family members in your travel plans! Ensure that all parties involved enjoy hiking and making dramatic poses in pictures. And eat a lot.

So it was that my husband Colin and I drove three hours on an October Friday evening from Boston to [...Read More!]

Autumn Leaves, Unplugging, and Living on a Pond Raft

As you saw in my recent fall foliage article, I was in the heart-stoppingly gorgeous middle-of-nowhere, New Hampshire for my birthday. Throughout the weekend, the theme of “unplugging” and “being cut off from civilization” recurred… in part because my husband‘s friend decided to live for 24 hours on a raft and boat.

Let us call this friend “Cory” to mask his identity. See that lake in the photo, above? See the raft forty [...Read More!]

Sunset in Back Bay, Boston, Naughty on a Chocolate Tour

I was naughty on the second half of the Boston Chocolate Tour that I attended with a dozen other bloggers. In fact, I got naughty combined with creepy and hallucinatory… and it’s all the fault of the city and the sky.

I was focused on the chocolate and the clan at first… honest I was. The whole first hour and a half, I chomped the deep cocoa squares, smiling through chocolate-creamed teeth, [...Read More!]

Photos of a Chocolate Tour in Boston to Make You Drool

When someone asks, “Want to go on a chocolate tour?” you scream, “YES! YES!” then do a crazed dance around your house, squealing with joy. This is what happened to me thanks to Hiphost Tours and their Chocolate Tour of Boston. Little did I know the awkward moment it would cause.

The first Chocolate Destination of the tour was Beacon Hill Chocolates (by the MGH stop on the Red Line) where all these luscious [...Read More!]

Our Witty, Pretty Resort in Placencia, Belize: Chabil Mar

“Witty?” you may be muttering as you eye the title. “Since when is a Belize resort described as witty, huh?”

Listen: Chabil Mar is gorgeous (just look at these photos and try not to faint) and its staff is fantastic, but what made me roll on the floor laughing was that it has the funniest welcome packet of any hotel I have encountered in my extensive world travels.

Here are some excerpts from Chabil [...Read More!]

The Funniest Signs on Cape Cod, Thanks to Sandwich, MA

Notice the extreme seriousness of my face in the lead photo of this article.

But dearest readers, I ask you: How can you NOT be saddened, thinking of all the ham sandwiches in history that have been burned by toasters?

How can you NOT sniffle, remembering that veggie panini scorched by your Mickey-Mouse-shaped grill that went rogue last summer?

How can a single tear NOT roll down your cheek, recalling that day you put [...Read More!]

The Blues Brothers at the Parthenon of Athens, Greece

“I’m not leaving the Acropolis until we get a photo with those Blues Brothers!” I declared to my companions from our Greece Teacher Tour.

We were standing next to the 2,500-year-old Parthenon (the “Most Perfect Building Ever Created”) under the radiant sun in Athens… but I couldn’t take my eyes off of the five men dressed in spiffy black suits who were milling around like typical tourists.

“Why do you think they’re wearing [...Read More!]

The Fashion and Meaning of Greek Men in Skirts Dancing

Traditional Greek dance consists of men in fluffy white skirts spinning and jumping. And it’s great!

On our last day in beautiful Nafplio, Greece, our Greece teacher travel tour nestled into a golden-lit family restaurant for a traditional dance performance. Hoo boy!

While the two female Greek dancers maintained a stately dignity throughout, the male dancer duo went wild. Did the fluffy white skirts bring out their inner male dancing beasts???

UP went the arms of the [...Read More!]
