Watch Out! Too-Seductive Food on Martha’s Vineyard…

Notice something strange about this luscious breakfast?
Notice something strange about this luscious breakfast?

Did you catch the weirdness in that first photo? Yup… there is the mark of a tiny claw right in the middle of the luxurious mascarpone cream. But how did that get there???

The scene of the food-grabbing crime: The Harbor View Hotel.
The scene of the food-clawing crime: The Harbor View Hotel.

Back up to when Colin, baby Devi, and I walked into Water Street restaurant at the lovely Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts hotel where we were staying, The Harbor View Hotel.

Brioche French Toast: Mascarpone, Wild Blueberry Jam, Ginger Chantilly!” sang the alluring description on the breakfast menu. We practically lassoed our waitress, so jazzed were we to order. When the pretty dish arrived, I simply had to take photos of it. Little did I realize that Devi had other plans. The camera caught his mischief:

The mascarpone cheese grabber at work!

“Nooo!” I’m screaming in the third photo. “He’s got the cream! He’s got the cream! Pull him back!”

Happily, baby’s hand wiped clean and we were able to eat the French Toast. Mmm, was it good! We did not anticipate, however, that the culinary crimes of our son would continue.

The next morning we again walked into Water Street (yes, it’s that good) and I ordered the following: Legs & Eggs: Island Pasture Raised Confit Chicken Leg, Two Soft Poached Local Eggs, Waffle, Maple.”

Little did they realize, these Legs and Eggs were doomed.
These innocent Legs and Eggs were blissfully unaware that they were doomed.

Not having learned my lesson the previous day (fool!) I handed my camera to Colin and posed happily with the Legs & Eggs. The photo series below shows the scandal that ensued. In the blink of an eye, baby reached out, grabbed one poofy ball of soft poached egg, and hurled it onto my backpack, where it bounced and splatted upon the shiny floor. Nooo! My “Legs & Eggs” had been reduced to “Legs & Lonely EGG!”

Argh! Baby hurled egg to the floor, creating "Legs and EGG."

Thank goodness, after that we finally learned our lesson. The next day at Water Street (no really, it is THAT good to merit a triple visit), I ordered the Duck Trap: Hickory Smoked Salmon, Potato Pancake, Rainbow Trout Roe, Caper, Pickled Onion,” which was one of the coolest breakfast taste sensations I’ve ever had… and it remained unmolested by tiny baby hands. Victory!

Mmm... Duck Trap for breakfast!

Colin (also in a fish roe kind of mood) selected the Crabby Benny: Two Soft Poached Local Eggs, Fine Herb & Jonah Crab Salad, Cholula Infused Hollandaise, Flying Fish Roe.” In the photo series below, you will observe our jauntily-dressed baby reaching for the egg so he could smear roe, hollandaise, and egg yolk all over his Daddy’s goatee… But we foiled his plans! We won! We ate the breakfast, and it was delicious.

By this point we got wise to baby's tricks and avoided Fish Roe Hands.

Ahh, babies… Just as you figure out how to keep one set of their prankster antics at bay, they develop a whole new trick. I will leave you to guess what Devi did after this cute photo was taken.

That evening, after the baby had gone to sleep in his swanky travel crib, Colin and I ordered takeout from Henry’s, the other restaurant at the Harbor View. Check out what I ordered: The Truffle: Spiced Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate Pave, White Chocolate Crumble, Smoked Black Cocoa Cookies, Hot Porto Reduction.”
Holy cow. This is what it looked like:

At last, Mommy got a plate without little handprints!
At last, Mommy got to eat a dish without fearing little handprints!

Since the baby was asleep, I took my time snapping photos of my dessert from every angle before devouring it. The Truffle was SO GOOD. If you see little claw marks on this dish, don’t blame Devi. I definitely grabbed hither and thither until the plate was licked clean. Yum!

I am in love with this dessert.

It was a delight to experience creative forms of coastal New England cuisine beyond the usual cliches. Nice job, Martha’s Vineyard, at having food so unique and tasty that one can’t help but grab at it!

We were guests of Water Street and Henry’s, but all opinions and egg-hurling babies are my own.

That looks so good. Some of the most amazing unhealthy food I had in the US was in MA.

It sounds like your little man knows a good meal when he sees one! My kiddos are 5 and 8, and I still have to fend them off when I'm trying to take photos :)
