It was YCC staff member, Dorcas, who we hadn’t seen since she fell ill several weeks ago!
“Ehfoah?” Dorcas asked us in Ewe, shaking our hands and snapping our middle fingers together with a “POP.” “Are you fine?”
“Ehhh,” Millicent and I responded with twin grins. “Yes!”
We confessed why we were in the market: ever since experiencing the high of getting a $15 custom-made dress, I had become rabidly hungry for a second one. Dear Millicent had agreed to accompany me, for the very reasonable fee of a single Fan Ice.
“Ooh,” I cooed, “your hair looks really nice, Dorcas!”
“Thanks!” sang Dorcas, modeling her glistening onyx– wait a minute… I peered closer…
“Is that… plastic?” I asked, amazed at the superhuman sheen atop her head.
“It is!” affirmed Dorcas. Sure enough, her natural hair had been neatly divided into sections, then wrapped tight with shiny plastic thread. “The style is great,” explained Dorcas, “because you can wash it easily, it is cool in the breeze, and it lasts for months!”
Ingenious. I glanced around the market and realized that a small smattering of other ladies were also sporting the same style.
Very, very cool! Literally. When we reached the seamstress (clutching not one but TWO luscious new fabrics), my thick brown hair was dripping with sweat, despite being twisted up into a bun.
You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, Dorcas!
