Photos of Boston Under 6 Feet of Record Blizzard Snow

Yipes! Over six feet of snow have blanketed my dear Boston in the past 30 days, demolishing all previous blizzard records. We have now had EIGHT snow days off of school, forcing Boston Public Schools to eliminate two upcoming holidays to reach the allotted 180 school days before July hits. (Oh July… sweet, warm July… The city aches for you.)

Meanwhile, our public transportation system (the “T”) has completely shut down for today as another foot of snow plopped upon us and we struggled to dig free. As Boston’s never-ending blizzards made national news, people around the world must have become Google-curious, because all of a sudden I noticed thousands of readers finding this very blog.

Why? It turns out that my site is the #1 Google Images result for “Boston snow!” Unfortunately for people who enjoy accuracy, that search result actually pulls up this pretty blizzard article I wrote in 2013, NOT photos of our current situation.

Today, in an attempt to bring fresher photos on the internet scene, I finally ventured outside after days of huddling indoors avoiding Snow Globe City. I discovered two very different faces of the storm: In the famed Arnold Arboretum park, the snow is glorious!

In the streets, however, it is disgusting, and cars are doomed. To give you a balanced portrait of what Boston is experiencing now, I am alternating photos in this article between the Arboretum glory and the street stinkage.

That's crazy snow...

Actually, my most memorable snow period happened when I was living in Yamagata Prefecture. We got snow nonstop for a week (in December 2009). At times, unbearable snow (especially when I had to take off my gloves) but surviving that week gave me a sense of pride. I just wish I had more pictures of the snow.

I didn't associate Japan with heavy snow until I lived in Yamagata Prefecture - although during my first stint working in the country, I went skiing in Nagano Prefecture. Although the winter is generally miserable in Yamagata Prefecture (and the rest of the Tohoku region), the region is a great place for skiing and snowboarding.

Moved to Boston from Georgia in 1978 to attend school. I was excited about the prospects of snow, and then, the Blizzard of '78. Needless to say, my expectations were exceeded...

It's incredible to see the photos!

What's insane is that there is now two MORE feet of snow on top of this! We've hit EIGHT FEET OF SNOW!!!

After having lived in the Midwest for many years and then moving out, I can honestly say that the one thing I DO NOT miss about it is the snow.

Just looking at these pictures gives me flashbacks of waking up early and having to shovel the driveway in freezing temps.

Brrrrrrr!!!!

Sigh -- And yet I love this city and will never move! Travel, yes, lots, but move, no!

I lived in Boston many moons ago and finally today thought, "I gotta see what's goin' there." Whoa! It snowed when I was there but maybe a foot. This is crazy. Stay safe!
