I’ve always gazed up-up-upwards at the high-rise hotels dotting fashionable oceanfronts of the world, wondering, “What is it like to look down at this beach from such heights?” Happily, I just got the chance to see for myself during travel through San Juan, Puerto Rico.
When the receptionist at the San Juan Marriott told us our room was on the 19th floor, I became giddy with excitement. My first bird’s-eye view room ever! The elevator ride skyward produced so much altitude so fast that my ears popped.
Once in the room, Colin and I threw open the door to the balcony and stepped out. I gasped and clutched my husband’s arm. “Whoa!” I exclaimed, dizzy. “This view is no joke!” Far below, tiny little beach umbrellas and palm trees waved hello.

Though we spent much of our time in Puerto Rico’s capital outside swimming or delighting in the colors of historic Old San Juan, it was a joy to be in our hotel room, too. My first sky-high oceanfront room shall not be my last, mark my words!
