Where to Stay in Provincetown, MA With a Family or Dog

“Drat!” I growled as the ferry pulled away from Provincetown, MA, chugging baby and me back to Boston. “I forgot to photograph the cookies!”

When choosing where to stay in famed P-Town, Cape Cod, knowing that there is a plate of fresh-baked cookies in the central living room of a hotel all day is a key factor, and our bed and breakfast had ’em. These cookies were going to be front and center in this article… But instead of photographing them, I ate them. Seven of them. Whoops!

Luckily, there are many other, non-cookie-themed perks to the Provincetown Hotel at Gabriel’s (click here for availabiility and rates), the lovely family-and-dog-friendly B&B where we spent two nights and three days. The Provincetown Hotel at Gabriel’s is literally across from Town Hall, and at the foot of the Pilgrim Monument that forms the iconic center of Provincetown. Pop out of your room, and in one block, you’re on Commercial Street: the main drag for restaurants and shops.

Given that it takes about 45 minutes to simply get out the door when traveling with a baby, it was mighty nice not to need to walk or even drive a long way to get to the center of everything! Speaking of driving, the Provincetown Hotel at Gabriel’s has parking a short hop away from the front door.

Freshly-baked breakfast is included in your hotel stay, and is awesome. Yogurt parfaits, and oven-warm pastries grace the self-serve table as you wait for your custom-ordered hot breakfast to be prepared and brought to you. Every day there are several different options to order, and I confess to requesting “a little of everything” both days. Burp!

Your morning meal can be devoured inside the sunny communal dining room (which has both small tables and shared ones), or in the outdoor courtyard: a space so peaceful and green that it’s a shock to realize that the bustle of downtown Provincetown is just a few steps away.

I have great respect for the hard-working staff members who keep the spaces of the hotel beautiful, inside and out. Every employee we spoke with was charming, kind, and sweet… and isn’t that the heart of what makes a bed and breakfast great?

What about the inside of our hotel room? The reason the Provincetown Hotel at Gabriel’s is ideal for families is that comforts of home abound, except there’s someone else to feed you breakfast and make your bed! Check out the photo below, from one corner of our room.

As you can see, our hotel room had a kitchenette, plus an eating area, which is perfect for easy family take-out dinners after a long day of sightseeing. You can also spot the fireplace and a large flat-screen TV. Oh, and the room also had a washer and dryer, which we put to good use on day one after a baby spit-up situation, a mere hour after declaring, “Well, we probably won’t need to do laundry in just three days!”

There are hundreds of DVDs available to borrow for free, and I enjoyed watching the Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson vehicle, “Starsky and Hutch” waaaay more than a 34-year-old woman probably should, sprawled on the king-sized bed and stuffing fresh-baked cookies into my mouth between guffaws. The baby slept peacefully through the whole thing in the crib provided by the hotel. Win!

Oh, how could I forget? Our hotel room also boasted a bathroom with happy pink walls, a TV, and a jacuzzi. Swanky! What else was there to do but strap a purple bow on baby’s head and pose inside the bathtub?
